Mercer Canada - Innovation Department

(May - August 2018)

• Led a full stack development team in a global corporate innovation department
• Designed and implemented a cloud based data collection tool to be used in the core HR consulting business
• Consulted with business leaders as the technical resources in developing new and innovative business ideas, projects, and strategies

During my internship in the Innovation Department at Mercer (Summer 2018), I lead the design and implementation of a brand new web app that modernized the data collection process for one of the company’s consulting services. The old process relied on excel spreadsheets and although an effort to modernize had been made, virtually no progress was achieved. I was brought in to fix this system. After analyzing the requirements and looking at what had already been done, I decided the system needed to be completely rewritten to use an up-to-date framework and a more scalable, modular architecture. I redesigned the entire system from the database schema, to the backend API, to the frontend interface to meet the requirements. In addition to this web app, I also consulted with upper management on the technical side of some potential new products. About halfway through my internship, another, less experienced developer (straight from high school) was hired and I was given the unique opportunity to mentor another developer.

Inkbox

(June - August 2017)

• Full stack web developer on an ecommerce site with a custom photoshop-like tool that allows users to custom design their own temporary tattoos in their browser
• Built new features from the backend API to the frontend UI/UX
• Accepted an extended work term following good performance

During my internship at Inkbox (Summer 2017), I worked as a full stack developer on their custom tattoo designer which allows customers to custom design their own semi-permanent tattoo from their web browser. At Inkbox, I got to work under a much more experienced developer where I learned how to design software that was maintainable and scalable well into the future. The internship was scheduled for 2 months, but after realizing my value, Inkbox extended it into August and hired a developer to take my place at the end of my internship.

Best Overall Project, Final Year Capstone

April 2019

• Won Best Overall Project in my final year Capstone course out of 22 teams
• My team built a Chrome extension that uses machine learning and optical character recognition to "see" a webpage like a human does to perceptually block ads on a website instead of using filter lists like traditional adblockers

In my fourth year at Western, my team of three won the Engineering Capstone course where the class is split into teams and tasked to build something of their choosing and present it at the end of the year. My team decided to build an adblocker powered by Machine Learning which provided several benefits (and a few drawbacks) over current adblocking methods. After eight months of programming and two nerve-racking presentations, my team won the prize for Best Overall Project.

First Prize, Third Year Capstone

• 3^rd year capstone-like project course: 18 teams tasked to build a cloud based physiotherapy platform for a real physiotherapist/client
• Impressed with our results, the client contracted the team (on a paid basis) to develop additional features and functionality for a customer facing application
• Won First Place with a cash prize of $5000

In my third year at Western, the class was split into teams of six and everyone given the same project: build an online physiotherapy platform to the given specifications using any technology for a real, local physiotherapist. I had just completed my full stack development internship at Inkbox, so the team looked to me for leadership. Out of about 20 teams, my team won the contest (which came with a cash prize pf $5000) and was offered a contract extension to add some additional features. I had to decline due to my upcoming internship at Mercer.
